How to play Turf Loop

Steer a paint blob out of your color, draw a wet trail and loop back home to paint everything inside. Three CPU painters want the same board: cut their trails, keep them off yours, and hold as much paint as you can when the 2:30 clock runs out.

  1. Swipe, press the arrow keys or WASD, or tap beside your blob to steer it in four directions.
  2. Leave your color to draw a trail, then touch your color again to paint everything the loop surrounds.
  3. Run over a rival’s trail to cut them (+250). If a rival touches your trail, or you hit your own, you lose one of 3 lives.
  4. Grab the lightning bolt for 5 seconds of speed and the shield for 5 seconds of trail protection.
  5. When the 2:30 round ends you score 100 points for every 1% of the board you own, plus your bonuses.

About Turf Loop

Turf Loop is a territory-painting arcade game on a 45 by 56 grid of paper. Your paint blob is safe inside its own color. Step outside and it leaves a wet trail behind it, and the moment it touches your color again, everything the trail wrapped around floods in as your turf, rival paint included. Three CPU painters play by the same rules with their own habits: the teal one makes small, careful loops, the orange one grabs big chunks, and the violet one hunts long trails. A round lasts two and a half minutes, and only the paint you hold when the clock stops counts toward the score, plus the bonuses you banked along the way.

Turf Loop is an original game made for Rankeno Play and was first released in 2026. Rounds run free in the browser on phones and computers, nothing to install, and finished scores are ranked on the Rankeno Play leaderboards.

Turf Loop tips and strategy

  • The whole board is worth 10,000 points: every 1% you own at the end adds 100. Turf you lose to a rival before the bell is simply gone, so protecting what you hold matters as much as grabbing more.
  • A single loop that paints 100 cells or more earns a BIG LOOP bonus of 150, and 250 cells or more earns a HUGE LOOP bonus of 400. A long trail stays exposed for longer, though, and a cut throws the whole excursion away.
  • Loop around rival paint whenever it is close. Each rival cell inside your loop becomes yours and adds a STEAL bonus of 2 points on top of the land itself, while shrinking that painter’s share of the bar at the top.
  • Cutting a rival is worth 250 points and wipes out all of its turf, leaving blank paper you can claim. If one of your loops swallows a rival’s last patch of paint, the SURROUNDED bonus pays 400.
  • A red exclamation mark over the violet painter means it is heading for your trail. It only starts once you have been outside your color for a moment, chases trails within about 10 cells at first and up to 18 near the end, so turn for home as soon as the mark appears.
  • Power-ups never spawn inside your own turf. The lightning bolt makes you 45% faster for 5 seconds; the shield protects your trail for 5 seconds, and a rival that runs into a shielded trail is knocked out instead, which counts as your cut.

Turf Loop FAQ

What happens when you lose a life in Turf Loop?

You lose a life when a rival crosses your trail, when you run into your own trail, or when rivals paint over every last cell of your turf. You keep the land you own and reappear inside it after 1.2 seconds, standing still, with 2 seconds of protection; with no land left you get a fresh 5 by 5 patch. After the third life the round ends and you score what you hold.

Why does my blob stop moving in Turf Loop?

Your blob waits at the start, after every respawn and whenever it reaches the edge of the board. Swipe, press an arrow key or tap beside it to pick a direction. The 2:30 clock only starts with your first move, and while you are outside your color you cannot turn straight back into your own trail, so turn sideways instead.

Is Turf Loop free to play?

Yes. Turf Loop is free on Rankeno Play and runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. You can play straight away as a guest; a free account is only needed to save scores to the leaderboards.

Can I play Turf Loop on my phone or tablet?

Yes. It runs in mobile and desktop browsers, and the portrait stage scales to fit your screen. On a touchscreen: swipe to steer, or tap beside your blob. On a computer: Arrow keys or WASD to steer (mouse: click beside your blob, or drag).

How do the Turf Loop leaderboards work?

When you are signed in, every finished run is submitted automatically; guest scores are not saved. Boards rank one best score per player (highest points first) for Today, This week and All time, globally or among your friends. Today and This week reset at midnight UTC, and the week starts on Monday.
