How to play

Afterglow Highway is an arcade racing game on a curving, hilly neon highway that runs from golden hour deep into the night. Skim past traffic to charge Nitro, weave to build combos and reach every time gate before the clock runs out, across 100 levels in ten chapters.

  1. Your hover-coupe speeds up by itself. Hold or slide anywhere, move the mouse or press ← → to steer it across the lanes.
  2. Pass cars with less than about a metre to spare for CLOSE! bonuses. Changing lanes just before one is a WEAVE and counts double.
  3. Near-misses fill the Nitro ring. When it is full, tap NITRO, double-tap, click or press Space to blast through traffic for 3 seconds.
  4. The clock is your life. Bumping a car costs seconds, every time gate adds seconds, and the run ends when it reaches zero.
  5. Grab hoops for +5 seconds, Shield, Nitro cells, Score ×2, Magnet and Ghost.

Controls

About Afterglow Highway

Afterglow Highway is a pseudo-3D arcade racer with traffic, set on a highway that curves and climbs through ten chapters of one long evening: Sunset Coast, Neon City, Desert Night, Rain, Mountain Pass, Snow, Aurora, Canyon, Storm and Afterglow. Your hover-coupe cruises at 160 km/h within the first seconds, reaches about 284 km/h after five minutes and creeps toward 350, and the race clock is your only life: it starts at 40 seconds, holds at most 60, loses seconds whenever you bump a car and gains them at every time gate. Each chapter adds its own trouble, from cars that blink and change lanes, crests that hide the road and rain puddles that steal your steering, to tunnel walls, ice and snowplows, cone-lined lane closures, an oncoming lane through the canyon and wind gusts in the storm. Levels 5, 15, 25 and so on are lighter Glow Runs full of glow cells and extra time, every tenth level puts a pink rival coupe on the road to beat to the checkpoint, and after level 100 the chapters return mixed together.

Afterglow Highway is an original Rankeno Play game, first released in 2026. You can play it free in any browser on a computer or phone without installing anything, and finished runs go onto the Rankeno Play leaderboards, which only ever count runs started from level 1.

Afterglow Highway tips and strategy

  • A near-miss needs a side gap under 0.9 metres as the car drops behind you, and under 0.35 metres it becomes a RAZOR worth double. Near-misses less than two seconds apart chain into a combo up to ×20, and each one pays 50 points times the combo.
  • Nitro lasts 3 seconds at 35 percent more speed and smashes cars aside for 75 points each, but the ring does not refill while it burns. On levels 1 to 3 two near-misses fill it; later each one adds a third to a fifth, a WEAVE adds half as much again and a head-on skim in the canyon counts twice.
  • Bumps cost 2 seconds on the first three levels and 3 seconds after that, while the coupe spins on at full speed as a ghost for a second and a half. A Shield cancels one bump completely.
  • Gates pay 100 points for every second left on the clock, so a full clock is worth keeping. Reaching a gate with under 2 seconds left is a PHOTO FINISH worth 500, and time above the 60-second cap turns into points.
  • Watch the orange blinkers: a car signals for 0.8 seconds before it changes lanes and never cuts in right in front of you. In the storm a WIND warning comes almost a second before a gust shoves you sideways.
  • On rival levels the pink coupe runs a few percent faster than you and fires its own boosts. Passing it with Nitro and staying ahead at the checkpoint earns 1,000 points plus 100 per level and 10 more seconds on the clock.

Afterglow Highway FAQ

How does the race clock work in Afterglow Highway?
The clock starts at 40 seconds and counts down in real time. Every level is split into legs of about half a minute, each ending at a time gate that adds most of that leg's driving time back, so skilled driving with Nitro and the +5 second hoops is what keeps you ahead. Bumping a car costs 2 or 3 seconds, and the run ends when the clock reaches zero.
Do I have to tap the Nitro button with a second hand on my phone?
One thumb is enough: the coupe drives toward wherever your thumb is, and you can fire Nitro by tapping the round button in the bottom corner or by double-tapping anywhere on the road. With a mouse the coupe follows the pointer and a click fires Nitro.
Is Afterglow Highway free to play?
Yes. Afterglow Highway is free on Rankeno Play and runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. You can play straight away as a guest; a free account is only needed to save scores to the leaderboards.
Can I play Afterglow Highway on my phone or tablet?
Yes. It runs in mobile and desktop browsers, and the portrait stage scales to fit your screen. On a touchscreen: hold or slide where you want to drive; nITRO button or double-tap. On a computer: ← → or A / D to steer; Space, ↑, W or Enter for Nitro.
How do the Afterglow Highway leaderboards work?
When you are signed in, every finished run is submitted automatically; a run you leave part-way does not count. Played as a guest? Sign in within an hour in the same browser tab and your guest scores are posted too. Boards rank one best score per player (highest points first) for Today, This week and All time, globally or among your friends. Today and This week reset at midnight UTC, and the week starts on Monday.
