How to play

A one-button surfing game on moving ocean swells: hold to tuck your otter down the face of a swell, let go to fly off the next one. Reach isle after isle before the sun sets, across 100 levels in ten seaside chapters with dolphins, gulls, icebergs, geysers and whales.

  1. Hold anywhere to tuck and dive down the face of a swell; let go as the next swell lifts you to fly.
  2. Land with your body lined up with a down-face for a SMOOTH landing: clean rides build a chain and fill the golden meter.
  3. Hit the water steeply while still holding and the otter dives under, then BREACHES back out when you let go.
  4. Every isle you pass adds daylight, and threading the spray arch above it adds half as much again. The run ends at sunset.
  5. Grab floats for a kite, extra sun, a fish magnet, double points, a dolphin pal or a protective bubble.

Controls

About Swell Surfer

Swell Surfer is a one-button physics game about momentum on a living sea. A sea otter rides ocean swells that really move: hold to tuck it into a torpedo and race down the face of a wave, let go to spread out and fly off the next one. Line your landing up with a down-face for a SMOOTH landing and your speed carries on; slam into the water while still tucked and the otter dives under, then bursts back out in a BREACH. The sun is your clock. Every isle along the way adds daylight, threading the spray-and-rainbow arch above an isle adds half as much again, and a run of clean rides fills the golden meter for Golden Hour, six seconds of double points while the sun stands still. One continuous run crosses 100 levels in ten chapters, from Sunny Lagoon and Coral Reef past Open Sea, Kelp Forest, Iceberg Bay, Storm Front, Aurora Twilight, Volcano Isles and Whale Road to Sunset Crown, and each one brings something new: dolphins that launch you, head seas, snatching gulls, kelp mats, icebergs to ice-slide on, cross swells and whitecaps, aurora updrafts, steam geysers and whale backs. After level 100 the chapters come back as endless remixes.

Swell Surfer is a Rankeno Play original, first released in 2026. It is free to play in any modern browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install, and a finished run can be ranked on the Rankeno Play leaderboards. Every run starts at the first isle in the morning sun.

Swell Surfer tips and strategy

  • Hold on a down-face and let go on an up-face: tucked, the otter falls with over three times the pull it has when spread out, so each swell you ride like this adds speed, while the reverse bleeds it away.
  • A landing counts as SMOOTH when your path meets the water within 24 degrees of the slope, a window that narrows to 16 degrees by level 100. Holding as you fall lets you steer your descent onto the next down-face.
  • Every two clean rides in a row raise the chain by one, up to ×5. Smooth landings pay 20 points times the chain plus 10 for every half second of air, leaping fish pay 10 times the chain and the little fish skimming the surface 5 times the chain, so a long chain is worth more than a big jump.
  • The baseline pace rises with distance and a mistake only dents it: after a belly flop, which keeps 78 percent of your forward speed, the otter paddles back up to the baseline within about two seconds.
  • You start with 45 seconds of daylight and can bank up to 150, a little more in the late chapters where the isles lie far apart. Isles give back roughly the time a good ride needs to reach the next one, the arch adds 50 percent, a Sunburst float adds 8 seconds, and reaching an isle with under 5 seconds left gives a clutch bonus of 3 more.
  • Head seas in Open Sea, Iceberg Bay, Volcano Isles and Sunset Crown roll toward you at half the speed a following sea carries you, which changes the rhythm (their isles give a little more daylight to make up for it), while gulls glide in and swoop with their shadow on the water ahead of them: time your flight under or over the swoop, or carry a Bubble float, which shrugs off one gull, bump or flop.

Swell Surfer FAQ

How does a run of Swell Surfer end?
There are no lives: the daylight clock is the run. It drains one second per second, isles and Sunburst floats add time, and Golden Hour pauses it. When the sun reaches the horizon the otter rolls onto its back under the first stars and the run is over, so speed and clean landings are what keep you going.
What do the floats in Swell Surfer do?
Floats bob over the swells and unlock as you go. The Kite (from level 1) turns letting go into an 8-second glide, Sunburst (level 2) adds 8 seconds of daylight, the Fish Magnet (level 4) pulls in fish within 10 metres for 10 seconds, the golden starfish (level 7) doubles points for 10 seconds, the Dolphin Pal (level 11) boosts every smooth landing for 8 seconds, and the Bubble (level 21) absorbs one gull, bump, whitecap or belly flop.
Is Swell Surfer free to play?
Yes. Swell Surfer is free on Rankeno Play and runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. You can play straight away as a guest; a free account is only needed to save scores to the leaderboards.
Can I play Swell Surfer on my phone or tablet?
Yes. It runs in mobile and desktop browsers, and the landscape stage scales to fit your screen. On a touchscreen: press and hold anywhere to dive; lift your finger to fly. On a computer: Hold Space, ↓, S or Enter to dive; release to fly (mouse: hold the button).
How do the Swell Surfer leaderboards work?
When you are signed in, every finished run is submitted automatically; a run you leave part-way does not count. Played as a guest? Sign in within an hour in the same browser tab and your guest scores are posted too. Boards rank one best score per player (highest points first) for Today, This week and All time, globally or among your friends. Today and This week reset at midnight UTC, and the week starts on Monday.
