How to play

A one-thumb neon arena shooter: you only steer a small prism, and it aims and fires at the nearest shape by itself. Brush past shapes to charge a rainbow Prism Burst, catch the shards they drop to climb to a ×50 multiplier, and survive 100 levels in 10 chapters with a boss at every tenth.

  1. Drag anywhere to fly (a stick appears under your thumb), move the mouse over the arena, or use WASD / the arrow keys. Your prism aims and fires at the nearest shape in range on its own.
  2. Touching a shape, a ring, a laser or a boss beam costs a life. You start with 3 and can hold 5; after a hit a shockwave clears the space around you.
  3. Fly close past shapes without touching them to charge the Prism Burst meter. When it is full, tap (click, or press Space) to fire a rainbow ring that pops everything it reaches.
  4. Popped shapes drop shards. Fly through them to raise your multiplier, which also splits your shot into more colours. A hit halves the multiplier.
  5. Levels run on a clock and end early when you clear the arena. Glowing elites drop power prisms, and every tenth level is a boss.

Controls

  • WASD / arrows to fly
  • Space, Enter or Shift for the Prism Burst
  • Mouse: the prism follows the pointer over the arena, click for the Burst
  • P or Esc to pause

On a touchscreen: Drag anywhere to fly (a floating stick); tap for the Prism Burst.

About Shard Barrage

Shard Barrage is a neon geometry shooter built for one thumb. The whole arena fits on the screen at once, a glowing grid that ripples when things explode, and you fly a small prism through it while it picks the nearest shape in range and fires on its own. Your job is the flying: weave between Drifters, Darts and the rest, slip close past them to charge the Prism Burst, and collect the shards they leave behind. Shards raise the multiplier, and the multiplier is also your firepower, because it refracts the shot into two, three, four and finally five coloured bolts. The run is one continuous climb through 100 levels in ten chapters, from the plain Grid through Pulse, Splitters, Snakes, Gravity Wells, Mirror, Swarm and Lasers to Overdrive and the white Prism Core, each with a new family of shapes and a boss such as The Lattice, Maw, Hive, Lighthouse or Overclock.

Shard Barrage is an original Rankeno Play game, first released in 2026. Nothing needs to be downloaded or installed: it plays free in the browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and the score from every finished run goes onto the ranked Rankeno Play leaderboards. After level 100 the chapters come round again in an endless run.

Shard Barrage tips and strategy

  • Grazing is how the Burst charges. Passing within 20 units of a shape fills 15% of the meter at level 1 and 7% by level 100, and a razor-close pass under 5 units adds another 10% and pays 25 points times the multiplier. Popping shapes adds only a sliver after level 2.
  • Keep the Burst for a crowd. The rainbow ring reaches 170 units and pops everything in that circle in a chain, so ten or more pops within half a second of each other also pay a chain bonus of 10 points per pop times the multiplier.
  • A full meter is also a safety net. If something touches you while the Burst is ready, it fires by itself and you keep the life, once per level; after that save the meter stays empty for 5 seconds, so a ready Burst is not a shield you can lean on.
  • The multiplier gets more expensive as it grows: the step from ×1 to ×2 costs 11 shards and ×10 to ×11 costs 58. A hit halves it but never drops it below the colour you have reached (×5, ×10, ×20 or ×35), so the extra bolts you earned stay with you.
  • Your shots reach only 210 units, so to pop something far away you have to go to it. Shards fade after 5 seconds at level 1 and 3 seconds by level 100, and Gravity Wells swallow the ones near them, but popping a Well gives back two shards for every one it ate.
  • Power prisms unlock as you climb: Spread from level 1, Homing from 2, Shield from 3 (it takes one hit and lasts up to 20 seconds), Beam from 6, Orbiters from 9 and Overcharge from 13, which fills the Burst and makes it 1.5 times wider. Level 6 and every sixth level after it hold a +1 Life.

Shard Barrage FAQ

How do the bosses in Shard Barrage work?
Levels 10, 20 and so on up to 100 are boss levels. The boss arrives as an outline for a moment and then fights with its own pattern: shielding nodes, rings with gaps, a sweeping beam, a pull toward its mouth or a swarm. Popping it pays 2,000 points times the chapter number and gives a life back (up to 5). A boss that is still up after 70 seconds warps out and the run goes on without the bonus.
Is there any protection for a first-time player?
The very first touch of a run, if it happens in level 1 or 2, is forgiven: the shockwave fires and no life is lost. Level 1 is mostly slow Drifters with a few lazily turning Darts, and the Burst meter starts 40% full, so the first Burst is ready within the first minute.
Is Shard Barrage free to play?
Yes. Shard Barrage is free on Rankeno Play and runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. You can play straight away as a guest; a free account is only needed to save scores to the leaderboards.
Can I play Shard Barrage on my phone or tablet?
Yes. It runs in mobile and desktop browsers, and the portrait stage scales to fit your screen. On a touchscreen: drag anywhere to fly (a floating stick); tap for the Prism Burst. On a computer: WASD / arrows to fly; Space, Enter or Shift for the Prism Burst; mouse: the prism follows the pointer over the arena, click for the Burst.
How do the Shard Barrage leaderboards work?
When you are signed in, every finished run is submitted automatically; a run you leave part-way does not count. Played as a guest? Sign in within an hour in the same browser tab and your guest scores are posted too. Boards rank one best score per player (highest points first) for Today, This week and All time, globally or among your friends. Today and This week reset at midnight UTC, and the week starts on Monday.
