Crack five-letter code words before the clock runs out

  • Type or tap a five-letter word, then press Enter. You get six tries per vault.
  • Under each dial a gold lamp means right letter, right spot; teal means the letter is elsewhere in the word; dark means it is not in the word.
  • Cracking a vault adds time and opens the next door. Missing all six tries costs 30 seconds and shows the word.

About Word Vault

Word Vault is a five-letter word guessing game with a safecracker’s run clock. Each vault door holds six rows of tumbler dials. Set a word on a row and the lamps beneath it light up gold for a letter in the right spot, teal for a letter that belongs somewhere else and dark for a letter the code word does not use. Crack the vault within six tries and the door swings open, time is added to the clock and the next vault rolls in. The clock starts at three minutes, waits for your first letter and only drains while you are entering a guess.

A Rankeno Play original, Word Vault was first released in 2026 and plays free in any modern browser without a download. Each finished run can post its score to the Rankeno Play leaderboards, so you can measure your longest chain of cracked vaults against other players.

Word Vault tips and strategy

  • Speed pays twice. Each cracked vault adds a clock bonus of 2 points for every second under 60 that you spent typing on it, and the clock holds still while the lamps light and the door swings, so a quick, sensible opener beats a slow perfect one.
  • Crack vaults in three tries or fewer to build a streak: the vault’s base points are multiplied by ×1.5, then ×2, ×2.5 and finally ×3. One slower crack or a sealed vault drops you back to ×1.
  • Time bonuses shrink the deeper you go: +30 seconds for vault 1, 4 seconds less for each vault after that (never below +4), plus 5 seconds for every try you did not need. Bank time early, because late vaults barely pay for themselves.
  • Save master keys for the vaults that stall. A key reveals one letter in its exact place, picked from the spots no gold lamp has found yet, and you can only hold two, so a key earned while both slots are full is lost.
  • Read repeated letters carefully. Gold lamps are settled first and teal is only given for copies the code word really has, so a dark lamp on a letter that also lit gold or teal in the same guess means the word holds no more copies of it.
  • A sealed vault costs 30 seconds and shows its word, but the run goes on, so never panic-guess. Words outside the dictionary, or ones you already tried on this vault, are refused without using up a try.

Word Vault FAQ

How is a vault scored in Word Vault?

A cracked vault pays its base points (100 on vault 1, rising by 20 per vault to a maximum of 300) times your streak multiplier, plus 25 points for every unused try and the clock bonus of 2 points per second under one minute. Cracking the 30th and final vault ends the run with a 1,000-point grand bonus.

Does the Word Vault clock run while the lamps light up?

No. The run clock only counts down while you are entering a guess. It waits for your first letter, then holds during the lamp reveal, the door opening and the sealed-vault beat.

Is Word Vault free to play?

Yes. Word Vault is free on Rankeno Play and runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. You can play straight away as a guest; a free account is only needed to save scores to the leaderboards.

Can I play Word Vault on my phone or tablet?

Yes. It runs in mobile and desktop browsers, and the portrait stage scales to fit your screen. On a touchscreen: tap the on-screen keys; tap the key slot to use a master key. On a computer: Letter keys to type, Enter to try a word, Backspace to erase, 1 to use a master key.

How do the Word Vault leaderboards work?

When you are signed in, every finished run is submitted automatically; guest scores are not saved. Boards rank one best score per player (highest points first) for Today, This week and All time, globally or among your friends. Today and This week reset at midnight UTC, and the week starts on Monday.
