How we chose this list
Role-playing games are the category where a list can be quietly wrong for the wrong reasons, so this one is built on what a system actually asks of you. Our reviews weigh how deep the build and progression systems go, whether the choices made in the first hours still matter much later, and whether the campaign earns its length or pads it with repetition. A game that is enormous but hollow does not outrank a shorter one that keeps giving.
The genre also has a mid-game problem: many role-playing games open strongly and then coast on the same encounter loop until the credits. Our reviews judge the arc as a whole rather than the opening zone, so the score reflects how the systems hold up once the novelty has gone — whether new abilities, encounters and decisions keep arriving, and whether the final stretch is a destination or a delay. Every reviewed title in the genre appears on this list, ordered by its published score; nothing is held back.
Ranking here is deliberately plain: every title is ordered by the score our review published out of ten, highest first, and a tie goes to the title whose review is the most recent, so a newly published verdict is reflected straight away. Nothing is re-weighted for a trailer, a release window or a publisher. Price and the platforms a game runs on are read from the row beside it rather than asserted in this paragraph, and there is no external chart behind the order — it is our own verdicts, sorted.
